14 artists explore the role of art in disrupting the tourism experience.
curated by Ludovica Tata
In a context such as the Jubilee, in which the city of Rome, in order to accommodate a disproportionate and continuous number of visitors, changes its deepest specifications, "Tsunami. Spaces looping the loop" challenges the rhetoric of the "sacredness" of places to propose a critical and urgent reflection that radically redefines the relationship with the other. While mass tourism presents itself as an illusory democratization of travel, it also reveals its exclusionary and violent dynamics, showing how the possibility of moving is still a privilege of the few, closely linked to the desire for individual affirmation and the commodification of cultural authenticity. The project puts under the microscope the political and social implications of the tourism phenomenon, which fuels the gentrification and marginalization of local communities, robbing them of resources and, in many cases, identity.

Artists
The fourteen artists in the exhibition were selected through an open call in which they were asked to think about the dichotomy of living-visiting and relational dynamics that place reciprocity rather than profit at the center. The exhibition project, consisting of immersive installations, audio-video and relational devices, encourages a participatory experience and suggests alternatives for cross-cultural connection.
